Two Indian American students aged 17 years old high school students have won the top prize of $1,50,000 about the medical related projects in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search Contest, the Society for Science and Public have declared the announcements on Tuesday at New York.
Even though Indo Americans have formed one of the largest ethnic contingents, many have won prizes so far and none had received the top prize since 2012, except Nithin Reddy Tumma has won for Cancer Research. Two second prizes and two third prizes were bagged by the Indian teenagers. Amol Punjabi has won the first Place Medal for Distinction for helping drug therapies for cancer and heart disease.
Maya Varma’s smart mobile phone based lung function has received the First place Medal of Distinction for innovation. Maya has discovered a low budgeted device which will diagnose the lung disease as accurately as an expensive device. The SSP President Maya Ajmera has said the top winners of Science Talent Search 2016 have created through science and technology a solution which is needed for the future.
The prizes were given in three categories such as normal research, innovation and global welfare. Meena Jegadeesan has won the second place Medal of Distinction for her work in Mathematics. The third place was bagged by Kunal Shroff and Kavya Ravichandran. Among the Indian students’ projects, eight were related to the field of Medicine, and three to Mathematics and one combination for Maths and Cancer.
