Successive Indian governments made claims that Pak Occupied Kashmir is the integral part of India. They passed law also in parliament that POK is integral part of India and will make all efforts to bring it back to India.

However till now India didnot make any effort to capture POK. But CIA files discloses that US feared that India will capture POK right after the Bangladesh war. The declassified files of CIA show that the US government at that time thought that PM Indira Gandhi might order an attack on  West Pakistan to capture Pakistan-Occupied- Kashmir after India's operation to create Bangladesh got over.

This showed that US was readying a strategy if India attack the military power of West Pakistan. Henry Kissinger, National Security Adviser of US President Richard Nixon discussed various strategies due to deteriorating Indo-Pak ties in the wake of India's military offensive in East Pakistan. However, some top security officials in Washington felt the possibility of India launching a strike on West Pakistan was remote.

The then CIA Director Richard Holmes in one of the meetings of Washington's Special Action Group said "It is reported that prior to terminating the present hostilities, Mrs Gandhi intends to attempt to eliminate Pakistan's armour and air force capabilities,"

One document revealed that  though Nixon had "warned India to cut off economic aid in case of war in East Pakistan, the US administration was clueless on how to implement it. "Both the President and the Secretary of State have warned the Indians that we will 'cut off' economic aid in case of war. But do we know what that means? No one has looked at the consequences or examined the means of implementing a cut off,"

USA decided to take the help of China and USSR to reduce tensions. Kissinger was unhappy with CIA not having inputs about what China,India and Pakistan were upto at that time.
