Kakinada: Residents of forty flats in a building, Bhaskara Estate, in Kakinada, had to vacate their homes on Friday night as four pillars in the building were about to crumble.

Municipal authorities have issued a demolition order for the 13-year-old building, which was crumbling since Wednesday and had tree stumps placed at its base as support.East Godavari district collector D Muralidhar Reddy said that chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy had enquired about Bhaskara Estate. An expert team from jawaharlal nehru Technological University, Kakinada (JNTU-K) visited the apartment block on Friday and inspected the construction.

The team said that the building is not fit for habitation as poor quality material was used in its construction. Severe cracks have appeared in the building, they pointed out and advocated its demolition.

Meanwhile, the builders of the apartment have requested the authorities for two weeks’ time to strengthen the building. The expert team, however, has suggested municipal authorities vacate the flats as retrofitting technology is not feasible as it is a costly affair.
