Kakinada: There has recently been a significant increase in the number of grievances related to aqua culture. More and more people are coming to Spandana programmes in East Godavari with grievances related to it. Many aqua farmers cultivate ‘Vennamei’ prawn for its economic viability. These prawns are cultivated after taking due permission to cultivate fresh water fish. However, bore water is being used to cultivate these prawns.

as a result of which paddy fields are getting damaged. The coastal aqua culture authority (CAA) is supposed to register aqua farms in an area on the basis of recommendations of the district-level committees headed by the district collector. In order to cultivate prawn, farmers have to register with the CAA which is based out of Chennai. However, most farmers are cultivating prawn right after taking permission from the district collector. Moreover, a number of other issues too ail the aqua culture industry. Many seed hatcheries are supplying inferior quality seed. Most aqua farmers are violating licensing rules.

Another extremely significant problem among these is the use of banned chemicals and antibiotics in hatcheries and farms. Speaking to NEWS, deputy director of fisheries, P Jaya Rao said that the government has issued guidelines for identification on aqua zones to regulate aqua culture and to protect fertile agricultural lands. The taskforce committee comprising revenue, police, fisheries, drug and food control departments in the district are inspecting aqua farms, hatcheries and aqua shops to regulate the use of banned antibiotics and chemicals to maintain aqua norms.
