visakhapatnam: While the government has declared a ban on private practice of government doctors in the state, on the recommendations of a committee which, ironically, comprises only private doctors as its members, eyebrows are now being raised over the appointment of two members of this committee (both private practitioners from hyderabad) to head the AP medical council (APMC) and AP medical services infrastructure development corporation (APMSIDC). The government’s move has peeved many senior government doctors in the state.

“Even after 15-20 years of service, many of us are stuck as assistant professors in government hospitals and medical colleges. It is surprising to see two private practitioners from Telangana, who are neither too senior age or experience-wise, being placed in key positions in AP,” said a senior doctor.

The two doctors in question are Dr. Siva Reddy, a neurosurgeon from a private hospital in hyderabad, and Dr. B Chandrasekhar Reddy, who too is a neurologist from the same hospital. While the former was appointed as the chairman of APMC on August 28, the latter was named APMSIDC chairman two weeks back. As per medical sources, the two doctors had treated chief minister Jaganmohan Reddy after the knife attack on him at visakhapatnam airport in October last year.

“These two private doctors were also part of the expert committee on health reforms headed by Dr. sujatha Rao(Dr.Specialist). It’s the same committee on whose recommendations the government declared a ban on private practice by government doctors in the state on September 17,” said another doctor, who did not desire and wish to be named
