New delhi sources stated that Senior congress leader p. chidambaram got a sigh of relief as the Apex Court granted bail to him in the INX Media corruption case lodged by the CBI. Meanwhile he was in Tihar jail from last two months and the Supreme Court delivered judgment on the plea by Chidambaram's counsel challenging the delhi High Court's verdict denying him bail in the case.
Even though he got bail on Tuesday, he has to continue to stay in jail as he is presently in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate. Furthermore it has to be recalled that the CBI has arrested the former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on 21 August in connection with the graft case, which was charge sheeted recently along with his son karti chidambaram and others. Apparently chidambaram and others were accused of causing loss to the exchequer by allegedly committing offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code.
Presently chidambaram is in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the INX Media money laundering case. Moreover the CBI had registered an FIR on May 15, 2017 alleging irregularities in a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007, during Chidambaram's tenure as the finance minister.
