Only around 50 percent of the daily demand for sand in the State is being met now with several sand reaches that are still under floodwater. Out of the total 276 sand reaches and desiltation points in the State, only 64-65 reaches are functioning now. The officials blame the heavy rains in the catchment areas of rivers as the reason for the present situation.

government sources say that normalcy is expected to return to normal within a fortnight as the floods have started receding. On average, the daily requirement of sand is 1 lakh metric tonnes. The demand for sand is at its peak in summer. In winter, the demand is normal. Usually, the rainy season is a lean period for construction activity when the requirement of sand is not much.

Like never before in recent years, the rains are unprecedented and the rainy season is extended. So far 10 construction workers have committed suicide after they have become jobless and could not feed their families. The Opposition parties have increased heat on the government trying to showcase it as a failure of the new government.
