According to sources even as the bank employees’ unions are at loggerheads with the government on its move to merge public sector banks, there is a piece of information coming through an RTI query that there have already been 3,400 bank branches closed in the last five years. Meanwhile these branches are of 26 different public sector banks, the main one obviously being State bank of India.

Furthermore if even before the formal mergers, this many branches have been closed, it can be imagined what the impact would be when the large scale mergers are rolled out in the coming months. Reportedly the statistics released by the bank OF INDIA' target='_blank' title='reserve bank of india-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>reserve bank of india (RBI) in response to an RTI query reveal that highest figure has been during 2017-18 when 2,083 branches of the public sector banks stood closed and during the last year, 2018-19, saw 875 such branch closures.



Moreover it has also been disclosed that out of the 3,400 closures, 2,568 were of the State bank of india, the country’s largest banking institution. Earlier on april 1, 2017, Bharatiya Mahila bank, State bank of bikaner and Jaipur, State bank of hyderabad, State bank of mysore, State bank of patiala and State bank of Travancore were all merged with SBI.
