Accordingly in a major turn of events, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy's son-in-law rishi Sunak has been appointed as the new Finance minister of the United Kingdom. 39-year-old rishi Sunak, of indian origin, took over the reigns as Chancellor from Sajid Javid. UK's PM Boris Johnson was restructuring his cabinet for the first time since the 2019 General Election. On wednesday, he appointed rishi Sunak as the new finance minister in his cabinet. rishi is among the three Indian-origin ministers in Johnson’s team.
Meanwhile UK's previous chancellor Sajid Javid has resigned to his post. Sajid has shocked by quitting as the chancellor in the middle of prime minister Boris Johnson's cabinet reshuffle. Javid's resignation came when he was due to deliver his first Budget in four weeks' time. Apparently, Sajid Javid has "denied" to follow prime minister Boris orders to fire his team of aides, saying "no self-respecting minister" could accept such order. Thus, Sajid has been replaced by rishi Sunak who previously served as the Chief Secretary to the Treasury from July 2019 to february 2020. rishi has been the Member of parliament for Richmond since the 2015 general election.
Reportedly rishi is married to Akshata Murthy who is the daughter of indian billionaire and co-founder of IT services company Infosys, Narayana Murthy. The couple married in august 2009. They met while studying at Stanford university and have two daughters. Interestingly, rishi Sunak, who is a hindu, has taken his oath at the house of Commons on the Bhagavad Gita since 2017.
