amaravati sources stated that the andhra pradesh state government in concurrence with the ap Prison Department has released 259 prisoners from various jails in the state on interim bail. The decision was based on supreme Court’s directions on march 23rd, giving the states the option to release prisoners who are serving jail terms of seven years or below on interim bail. The apex court passed this order in view of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

 

The ap Prisons Department is taking necessary precautions including social distancing to ensure that the remaining prisoners don’t come in contact with one another. However, as part of the conditional bail, the andhra pradesh government imposed restrictions and ordered that the 259 prisoners should strictly adhere to self-quarantine and self-isolation, either at the quarantine centres set up by the state government or in their houses.

 

They were also ordered to return to the prison after a month. director General, Prisons Mohammed Hasan Reza has issued guidelines to all prison authorities to this effect. The prison authorities have also taken precautionary measures in crowded prisons after the Centre declared COVID-19 as a pandemic. Currently, there are 6,930 prisoners in all the 81 prisons within the state. Prison officials have taken the necessary precautions to protect the remaining prisoners from getting infected with coronavirus.
