kollywood industry's actor Siva Karthikeyan's hero, directed by PS Mithran, released in 2019 amid much fanfare. After the release, the film was mired in controversy when an aspiring director named Bosco Prabhu accused the filmmaker of plagiarism and filed a complaint against the makers. Recently, the madras high court has issued an interim injunction banning the film from being aired on television and OTT platforms. According to the judgement, Bosco Prabhu is said to have registered his script titled Vetri on 26.04.2017 with the south indian Writers' Association.
Since the case is still in sub judice, the film, which was streaming on amazon Prime, has now been taken down. In 2019, K bhagyaraj, head of the Writer's Association, compared the synopsis of Bosco and Mithran's scripts and asked Hero's producer Kotapadi J Rajesh to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the former. PS Mithran, who directed the film, convened a press meet in december 2019 to refute the allegations levelled against him. He said, "We incorporated many stories from newspaper articles and real-life incidents in the final script. They (Writers' Union) are speaking only on the basis of the synopsis. We worked for 446 days on the film, and I have an entire audio recording of the process. It is my filmmaking Bible."
He further added, "Just because someone thought a similar idea before me, I can't give him any monetary benefits. Comparing the synopsis or basic crux of the film and declaring plagiarism charges is unfair. They should compare the screenplay of the two scripts. I have given credits and remuneration to three writers who worked on my film.
