prime minister narendra modi on friday announced an interim financial assitance of Rs 1,000 crore for West bengal to aid the relief and rehabilitation efforts after conducting an aerial survey of the cyclone-hit regions with chief minister mamata Banerjee.West bengal chief minister mamata banerjee, who was present with modi during the survey, said 80 people have died so far. "We evacuated more than 6 lakh people. Time and density of cyclone was worse, more than a national disaster. The PM will conduct an aerial survey in south and North 24 Parganas. We will work together," she said. Banerjee had asked modi on thursday to visit the state and witness the devastation for himself.

Of the 72, 15 deaths were reported from Kolkata. The cyclone, which weakened into a depression on friday, was further reduced to a well-marked low pressure area over North bangladesh and the neighbouring area. “It is very likely to continue to move north-northeastwards and weaken further into a low pressure area during next 12 hours,” the indian Meterological Department (IMD) had said on friday evening. The cyclone hit bengal and odisha at a time when it is already struggling to fight the transmission of the novel Coronavirus.PM modi said to ensure minimum loss, the state and central governments have worked together. However, we couldn't save around 70 lives and we do feel sad about it. We are with them at this hour of grief. Rs. 1000 crore advance assurance will be given to West Bengal. Rs two lakh would be given to the next of kin of the persons deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the persons who got seriously injured due to the cyclone in parts of West Bengal".
