As the the lockdown extension continues and we try to adapt to our new reality, we have to all learn to not just work from home but spend 24 hours a day for weeks and perhaps months with our families or loved ones. There is little relief during this time as we are constrained to the indoors, a challenge for most of us, but more so for parents. Working mothers are feeling particularly burdened during this time, as they seem to have to carry the weight of meeting deadlines at the office, manage the domestic duties and be a full-time in charge parent, with little to no support.

In our parental coaching practice, our coaches are working with a number of people on finding a way to be able to manage the lockdown, balance their lives and support their children, so that frustration levels are not exacerbated and harmony, in as much as is possible, is maintained. Older children can help out more around the house with making their beds, getting involved in kitchen tasks, watering plants, wiping and disinfecting their own bathroom, clearing up their rooms etc.

This will enable them to get more responsible and be more self-reliant.For smaller children, both parents or other family members can take turns to do the required tasks. In the midst of trying to balance life at home it becomes equally essential to take some time for yourself, your partner and your family. Meditate, do yoga, join fitness classes, have a drink with your spouse, create fun family activities, celebrate the successes or important moments, to help you not just relax but bond a little together.
