Supply of drinking water to the common capital of Hyderabad and many parts of AP would be a nightmare until the monsoon of next year. Water levels at Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam reservoirs have reportedly hit new lows, with officials sounding alarm bells regarding the guaranteed supply of water supply that would be affected drastically.

Nagarjunasagar reservoir, currently the primary source of drinking water for both the states, has recorded a water level of 509.7 feet for the weekend which is below the 510 feet designated as minimum draw down level (MDDL). During the same time for last year, the level at the reservoir stood at 537.80 feet.

 Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project (AMRP)

Once this level falls to 507 feet, it would not be possible to draw any more water from this reservoir because for Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project (AMRP) water can be drawn until 507 feet. This affects the supply of the 225 million gallons a day (MGD) water under Krishna Phase I, II and III drinking water projects which are drawn from the Nagarjunasagar.

There are no hopes anyway as of now for any inflows into Nagarjunasagar unless there is more water released from Srisailam reservoir, which is currently controlled by Andhra Pradesh. With Osmansagar and Himayathsagar too drying up, Hyderabad is perched precariously from next month and once can imagine how summer will be!
