There are always two sides to a coin. The torrential rains in Chennai for past few weeks was cursed by everyone. Most of them blamed it for spoiling the normal livelihood. But at the same time the rain also had a beneficial factor.

The rains and floods flushed the filth and the rain also washed the particulate matter in the air. This has brought down the pollution levels. Regarding this, a statistical data from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board said, "The entire city was suffering from Sulphur dioxide, Nitrogen dioxide, PM10 and PM2.5.

But due to the rains everything came down. Pollutants exist in the form gas, particulate matter (PM) or vapour. While PM is washed away with the water, the rest dissolve in the water."

Another person said, "The rain kept the pollution concentration down. Cars are the biggest source of air pollution and due to torrential rains, all cars were down. With lower temperatures, gases in the air get trapped. They become immobile and do not disperse easily."
