Chennai Port formerly called as Madras Port. It is the second largest port of India, behind the Nhava Sheva Port, and the largest port in the Bay of Bengal. The port already got spot light as it went green.


To reduce carbon gas emissions, Chennai port will go green with 500KW Solar energy project and a wind farm capable of generating 14.5MW power. Now the central Government has decided to take the 'Green' initiative to all 13 major ports n the nation.


Now this Solar plant is coming to Chennai port and it will be completed by end of this year. The green initiative is aimed at cutting down the high input costs and conserving the limited natural resources like coal, gas and oil.


Now the port has made a new record by handling the most quantity of steel. The port has handled 9340 tonnes of Steel Cargo from the vessel MV Dancewood SW. This is indeed a big record. The previous record was in 2005 when the port handked 7196 tonnes from the vessel MV Starace.
