The Guwahati molestation case which by now is to known to many is causing ripples of national outrage. In this case 20 men have molested a girl on July 9th, when she is on her way back home from a party. Of these 20 men 4 are said have been arrested so far. The issue is onto the social media, with many concerned individuals demanding the arrest of all the culprits and asking for the severe punishment to be meted out to them. It is a known fact that these days the outrageous acts against women are on rise and in many cases, the incidents are not seeing the limelight. The Money power and the muscle power of those bestial aggressors are the barriers that intimidate and drive way the victims, from making a complaint against them to the law enforcing authorities. When we look into the reasons for the many fold, rise in such incidents, we find that the changes that were brought about by the Consumerist culture and unbridled individualism turn out to be the main culprits. In addition the ‘desire for the ‘Instant Gratification’ and the ‘possessiveness’ that is being promoted by the commodity economy are turning out to be the bane for our women. So to tell simply, the commodity culture or the consumerist culture has promoted a mindset in a part of the youth, which drives them, toward objectifying women too. She too is something to be ‘used and thrown away’ sort of an outlook is being promoted by the advertisements and promos, which show up women in all voluptuous gyrations. So, is the culture of every individual unto himself; which has weakened the social bonds even amongst the members of the family, thus escalating the selfish and greedy motives to their ultimate bestial levels. Here one could not but also mention the ‘fast food’ culture that had percolated down to the ‘kick’ culture which is reinforcing the attitudes of 'fulfilling ones needs at any cost i.e even at the cost of the life and honor of the fellow humans too.  Any way, it is wonderful to see so many of our Indians joining the ranks of those who are condemning this ghastly act against this girl who fell victim to the nastiness of the dehumanized lumpens. Let us hope, this showing of solidarity and concern would gather momentum and create a culture of decency toward women, thus realizing the words of Mahatma Gandhi, that the hallmark of the Independent India should be the condition, where in a women could walk alone on the streets of this country at midnight fearlessly. ..
