Chennai city is quite known for the hot climate and also the traffic violators. Even though Chennai Traffic Police stands in every nook and corner of the streets to capture the violators, they just sneak through traffic and escape. However the accident rates were also increased.
When we inquired a source, the source said that the department is facing a crisis in staff and it is still yet to take an advantage of all the CCTV cameras to nab the culprits. Most of the cities have started the practice, but still Chennai is par behind.
By 2010, Chennai city commissioned a Rs.3 Crore project to install CCTV cameras on all major junctions of the city. The source further said, "There are CCTV cameras in every main junction of the city. But still they are not functioning.
Installations of CCTV cameras are under progress in 40 junctions and (they are) yet to be functional. We don't know when will these works be completed. We are still yet to take a call on the optical fibre network which will transmit footage from cameras to the control room."
