Two weeks back, many were at Kumbakonam to have a bath at the Mahamaham tank on the occasion of the special day of Masimaham. The Potramarai pond which is near Cauvery River was made dirty by the devotees. Thousands of devotees are still visiting the holy shrine for the Mahamaham festival and the temple rituals started since February 13th.
A devotee from Trichy has said that he went to the shrine on the occasion of Mahasiva Ratiri and he has washed his legs with water till his ankle. He had a holy dip in the water after having a dilemma whether to have a dip in the water. Because the tank was completely polluted.
T.Velliyammal who has come from Tirupur with her son said that the Potramarai tank and the Chakra Padithurai were very much polluted than Mahamaham tank and she further said that there was little space to reach the small stream of water which was flowing in the middle.
The Officials are recycling the water in the Mahamaham tank and fresh water is pumped into the tank. The Potramarai tank and Chakra Padithurai are full of garbage and the temporary toilets are not cleaned properly and to ensure cleanliness the temple authorities have made steps to clean the garbage.
