Last week there was ban on 344 medicines and 500 drugs and they included various antibiotics and anti-diabetes drugs/ Sources said that these drugs are unsafe and ineffective. Health ministry banned 344 fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs including commonly-used cough syrups like Phensedyl, Corex and Benadryl.
A Senior authority said that the ministry is evaluating list of more than 5000 products and more than 1000 products are under severe scrutiny. Last week 'Vicks Action 500' was banned and today Crocin tablets was banned. A senior official said, "Our primary objective is to ensure only safe products are available on the market.
We are making detailed review of all tablets and cough syrups and research papers showed that these medicines are irrational combinations. Just because adverse effects never happened we can't ignore the scientific evidence showing discrepancies." Doctors are right now worried as to prescribe the medicines.
Usually doctors prescribe medicines with the combination. Due to this ban, there would be a huge revenue loss for pharmaceutical firms. A loss of 3800 Crores is expected and more than 500 drugs are expected to face a ban.
