Usually the drugs are tested on animals which is already tested in foreign countries is presently banned by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The ban falls under the amendment Schedule Y in the Appendix I, as per the rule the animal toxicity has been approved by the regulatory authority of the country and the same process need not be done in India and it is needed only in special concern when it is in written form.
Leading Animal Welfare Group Human Society has welcomed the decision. Gauri Maulekhi has said they have welcomed the decision which was passed by the Health Ministry. The new decision will save thousands of poor animals and also the start of new era of sophisticated animal testing alternatives which will be made in India.
The Union Minister of Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi have written to the Ministry about the practice. The Drug Technical Advisory Board has said when the drugs are tested under Good Laboratory Practice Conditions with appropriate requirement, there is no further toxicity test is needed.
Gauri Maulekhi has stated India has been fully adherent to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has taken decision regarding Mutual Acceptance of Data since 2011. The OECD has estimated that the decision through MAD will save more than 150 million scores of animals every year by avoiding duplicative testing.
