Around 693 kilometers of State Highways will be handed over tit ne National Highways Authority of India for doing some up gradation work. Presently the list of roads is ready and it has to be handed over to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORT) at the earliest, which was announced by the source in Highways Department.


An official said roads are heavily populated with more vehicles and if the roads are widened it will ease the people. The assets of the roads are spaces on both the sides, trees, bridges, culverts and drainage will be handed over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).


The transfer will be favorable for the state and there will be less maintenance cost and the roads will also be in good condition. Around 5004 km of National Highways are run by the state, out of which 1998 km of roads are maintained by the State government and funds will be allotted by the MORT and the remaining 3006 km are maintained by the NHAI.


Even a motorist has to pay for using the road at the toll center. In many instances the roads with two lanes are managed by the NHAI. K.T. Easwaran who travels frequently has said more amounts are collected in areas where the road widening work is not completed.
