There has been a huge drop in Groundwater level in Old city. Scenes related to summer have already started to happen in most parts of city and dry situation is seen everywhere. Water shortage has been the major problem and we can see that in most of the areas.

Now this is a huge threat in and around Charminar. Dry situation which is prevailing has been result of years of neglect from the State Groundwater Department. Officials say that aquifer levels in the precincts of the Old City have been on steady decline for the last five-years.

A glance through hydro-graphs as shown by Ground water department clearly depict that the ground water has been dropped. The level has dropped 24 metres by second week of March itself. However Ground water is available in other parts of city such as Nacharam and Rajendranagar.

K.Dhanunjaiah who is Deputy director of the department said, "Things get worse in some areas such as Gulshanpura, Chandrayangutta, Darusalam and Nampally. No ground water is found even after digging to a depth of 21.6 metres. The area is completely packed as there are no space for building new rain-water recharge pits."
