The DMK has allotted five constituencies to the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi and few days before the Indian Union Muslim League was provided with equal number of seats who is the traditional partner of DMK. Some sections feel that the DMK has underestimated its own base in the community and unwontedly providing space for smaller groups.

During 2011 Assembly elections, AIADMK Party has allotted three seats to the MMK of which the party has won two seats and meanwhile the DMK Party has allotted three seats to IUML and all were lost. In earlier days the Muslims traditionally identified themselves with DMK with prominent faces like Sadiq Pasha, Nagoor E.M. Hanifa and former minister A.Rahman Khan.

The DMK President Karunanidhi has maintained close relationship with IUML stalwart Muhammad Ismail who was popularly known as Quaid-e-Milleth. If there are constituencies with high Muslim population, you will see major Dravidan Parties will be getting more votes than what candidates of smaller group gets when they contest on their own.

As per 2011 census, the state’s Muslim population is around 5.86%. The MMK President M.H. Jawahirullah has said during 2011 local bodies’ polls, they have contested alone and has won in 200 places. In 2009, the MMK has cornered four percent of the votes which was polled in the constituencies it has contested. The Dravidian major has given five seats each to MMK and IUML.
