West Bengal recorded the highest voting percentage of 81% and Assam also had a high voting percentage of 78% in the first phase of Assembly elections which happened yesterday. No incidents of election related violence were reported as per Election commission.


Deputy Election Commissioner Sandeep Saxena at a press conference in the national capital said, "This is the highest polling percentage for both West Bengal and Assam. The figures could go up. In 2011, the assembly constituencies of West Bengal stood at 83.72 per cent and 75 per cent in Assam and by 2014, the numbers read 83.39% and 79% respectively."


Yesterday elections took place in 18 of the 294 constituencies of West Bengal and among this 18, 13 places were naxal-affected areas. Similarly in Assam, 65 of 126 constituencies went to polls. Regarding the naxal affected segments, Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Kumar Gupta said,


"We have ensured all voters returned safely and all the lectronic Voting Machines are kept safely at recording rooms." The second and final phase of elections for Assam will take place on April 11th.
