Bombay High Court has ordered BCCI and Cricket  associations in Maharashtra and Mumbai to shift Indian Premier League (IPL) matches to some other place due to drought and water crisis.

A division bench headed by Justices V.M.Kanade and M.S.Karnik while hearing a PIL filed by NGO 'Loksatta Movement' said, "How can you waste water like this. Whether people's necessity is important or IPL Match? This is going to be criminal wastage. We all know the condition prevailing in Maharashtra."

Court further asked BCCI whether cricket matches are so important. The court further said, "You should shift IPL matches to some other state where water is in abundance. It is Government's responsibility and duty to do something about this. Government itself must take some steps on this issue."

Court also heard response from all other respondents, including the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Vidarbha Cricket Association, Maharashtra government and the civic bodies of Mumbai and Nagpur.

To maintain pitches, the stadiums should use 60 Lakh litres of water. Court also noted that in some spots of Maharashtra, section 144 has been imposed with respect to vicinity of water supply spots.
