The date of school education department for 2015-2016 has stated that Telangana has 40,821 schools which include 28,609 schools is in government sector and 12,212 schools in private sector. Nearly 60.63 Lakhs, 27.92 Lakhs (46%) students are enrolled in government run schools and 32.71 Lakhs students are studying in private schools (54%).

This clearly shows that government schools are in diminishing rate whereas the private school rate is flourishing. The pupil teacher ratios, retention and dropout rates are totally different in government and private schools. The overall enrollment figures may look quite impressive but there are wide variations among communities at two levels of school education.

As per the census, the Telangana’s population is 3.5 crores and SCs, STs and Muslim constitute nearly 15.45%, 9.08% and 12.68% respectively. BCs account for 50% share of total population as per estimates. DISE 2014-2015 statics has shown that there were nearly 43,839 elementary schools across the state with total enrolment of 49.14 Lakhs with 2.43 Lakhs teachers.

The retention and transition rates are higher for SCs, STs and BCs. The state government has currently declared that 120 residential schools will be established exclusively for the minorities and are anticipated to start classes from the upcoming academic year 2016-2017.
