Tragic suicide of Rohit Vemula,scholar of Hyderabad University pierced the hearts of everyone. The incident created huge controversy with students demanding the resignation of Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and also VC Prof. Appa Rao.
Almost all political parties and national leaders liker Rahul Gandhi, Kejriwal and others visited the universty and even JNUSU president Kanhaiah Kumar too addressed the HCU students. Now on Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary, Rohit Vemula's kin changed their religion and became buddhists.
Rohit's mother Radhika Vemula and brother Raja Vemula,in the presence of Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s grandsons, Prakash and Anandraj Ambedkar, at an event to be held in Mumbai embraced Buddhism. They said Rohit Vemula had a liking for Buddhism as a follower of Ambedkar who was a Buddhist.
Hyderbad University suspended Rohit and four othere students from the hostels for allegedly assaulting ABVP leader over the argument over the hanging of Yakub Memon in Aug 2015. Many believe this resulted in Rohit's suicide on Jan 17,2016.
