The Telangana Forest department is all set to roll out high-end android phones which are equipped with latest technology and to help 3,000 field-level officers quicken their response to forest offences. For the past few years there is depletion of green cover, smuggling of forest produce, poaching and encroachments in forested areas are on increase.

Currently with the use of Smartphone and dedicated software in place the authorities hope to reduce, if not put an end to such offences in the forest areas. The project cost around Rs 20 crores will help the track offenders, record timings, identify danger to wildlife and help deploy or re-deploy resources.

The officials have stated that 80 per cent of forested areas will have mobile connectivity over the next two years. The Telangana State Forest Report 2014 has showed that nearly 50 sq km of forest cover in the state had been due to deforestation and encroachments.

Nearly 500 Smartphone were purchased initially and installed with the requisite software and another 2,000 will be purchased by the end of the fiscal year. Presently to access data officers have to come to office and use their desktops and with the data flowing in directly into their handsets, each data entry whether it is a photograph of the site of an offence or record of loss of plantation and wherever there is no connectivity, the data will be stored in the device and uploaded on reaching an area which has connectivity.
