Each time a thunderstorm happens at Hyderabad, there would be a building crumbled and lives lost. Last week, a hardware business man who lived in a 100 year old building lost his life. But despite that, people continue to stay inside the building.

One of the residents in such an old building said, "This house is inherited from my father and the question of moving out does not arise. Our livelihood is dependent on this." There are nearly 800 buildings in  Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area that are in a dilapidated condition.

Two years back, GHMC made a complete survey of these old buildings and they detected numbers as 1800. Even though the numbers have been reduced, most of the buildings still need immediate demolition. Last midnight thunderstorm brought down roof of one structure.

Thankfully, there are no fatalities. The problem with old buildings is that many of them have excavated cellars, which weakens the structure. Now GHMC takes stern action and they issue notices under Section 456 and 459 of the HMC.
