The Election Commission of India deferred polls in the Aravakurichi Assembly constituency amidst allegations of widespread distribution of money to voters; the Karur police have registered another case against P. Anbunathan of Ayyampalayam from whose premises Rs. 4.77 crore cash was seized. 


The police have registered a case under Section 171 (B) (bribery) of IPC and Section 276 (C) (1) (willful attempt to evade tax) of Income Tax Act, 1961, against Anbunathan, a day after the cash, counting machines and a fake ambulance were seized on April 22, 2016, the police had registered a case against Mr. Anbunathan on charges of cheating.


He was granted advance bail by the Madras High Court in the first week of May, parrying questions on the political allegiance of Mr. Anbunathan. The seizure of cash was followed by another sensation that a man had come to the office of the Superintendent of Police, Karur, with a gun and explosive substances.


A senior police officer said has told that the suspected weapon was only a toy gun and not capable of opening fire and the opinion of forensic and ballistic experts would be sought before a final decision is taken in the case.
