The IIM bill has finally reached the Cabinet for approval and it will be tabled in the monsoon session of Parliament and is likely to go to either a select or standing committee after much wrangling between the HRD ministry and the PMO.

Sources have stated that the ministry had its way on two of the four contentious issues, on the issue of autonomy and the ministry has wanted the President to be the visitor of IIMs with power to review their functioning, just as it is in the case of IITs.

Sources have also added that the PMO had suggested that the board should have five of the 14 members from among alumni and there was a fear that five is a sizeable number that could easily influence and have its way in making big decisions.

Meanwhile the PMO has argued that non-government voice should be there in the board, the ministry agreed for five alumni and the ministry has also agreed with the PMO's suggestion that IIMs need not come to government for any change in regulation.
