On Monday in a bid to save hundreds of trees around the KBR National Park from the axe, members of Hyderabad Rising, the umbrella group leading the protests against the proposed Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), has submitted a representation to the Telangana chief secretary.


A study conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore has revealed a survey that a dismal 2.6% tree cover as compared to the national average of 10%", it has pointed out that the urban built-up area in Hyderabad has witnessed a 400% jump between 1999 and 2009.


The representation has stated that the KBR National Park is located on a ridge and through sub-soil seepages via intricate aquifer systems and surface flows, acts as important water sink feeding several lakes in and around the city.


The Hyderabad Rising has added that as per the Environmental Impact Assessment notification, a public hearing is mandatory for any development projects apart from obtaining environmental clearance from the appropriate authorities.
