Illegal immigrants issue has been the burning topic for many years in Assam. This often resulted in communal clashes and high tensions in the state. The state has been burning as illegal immigrants managed to get voter id cards and formed Muslim colonies and spurt in terror activities posed threat to the internal security of the country.
However political parties turned blind eye to the problem due to vote bank politics. Now with BJP coming to power creating history in Assam, focus shifted on illegal immigrants and infiltration. Assam's to be chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal speaking to scribes stated that Bangladesh borders will be closed and secured to stop infiltration.
Sarbananda Sonowal who led student moment against foreigners in 80s said "Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had given a two-year time frame for permanent sealing of the border. We will work towards finishing within that time frame the border sealing work, including the riverine border,"
On stopping infiltrations he said "As soon as the border is sealed permanently, the infiltration trend will stop automatically. Plus we will create awareness among the people to prevent infiltration", and added "When the final draft of the (ongoing) updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam is published, it will be clear who are the citizens and infiltrators will get identified."
