The Madras High Court has said, adding that the state government must nurture scholars, fund translation works and encourage research works to promote Tamil across the world paying lip service or holding world Tamil conferences by spending crores of rupees will not help the language development.

Meanwhile the bench was passing orders on a PIL filed by R Lakshminarayanan who wanted the court to direct the directorate of Tamil development to take appropriate steps to teach Tamil language to non-Tamils in India by starting correspondence course through Thanjavur Tamil University.

The judges have stated that if not for development, at least to keep the language alive, by passing it on to the next generation, children should be taught the basics of Tamil language.

The bench added that when western scholars’ exhibit keep interest in learning and understanding Tamil and do research and development, it is the duty of every Tamil, to at least save the language from becoming extinct.
