Chennai is a city with a vehicle population of nearly 45 lakh; about 45 cases a day are registered against people who honk loudly or unnecessarily and according to a traffic police officer, each sub-inspector in Chennai has to book 50 people a day for various violations and many cases are arbitrarily booked.

An inspector has stated that if there are media reports of noise pollution which are caused by air horns, you may receive a Chellan for it even if you are caught for some other violation, such as not wearing a helmet.

Anumita Roychowdhury the executive director for Center for Science and Environment has told that vehicles are the biggest contributors and they increase the ambient noise levels round the clock and other sources like power generators or temples are episodic in nature.

An official has told that the Regional transport officers have said that they check for air horns when the vehicles come for fitness certification (FC) and they remove the air horns while coming for FC and they are get caught only when we check them on the road.
