Chennai sources have stated that according to the policy note of the Food and Consumer Protection Department tabled in the Assembly by Food Minister R. Kamaraj, the card issuing authorities were given instructions regarding elimination of ineligible or bogus cards through door-to-door intensive verification of family cards registered in a fair price shop.


R. Kamaraj has told that in total, over 4.85 lakh bogus cards were found and eliminated, which is an ongoing process and a total of 16.20 lakh new ration cards were issued between June 2011 and June 2016.


It is stated that as on June 30, a total of 2.03 crore ration cards were in use across the State, including 1.91 crore green cards (rice option cards), 10.79 lakh white cards (sugar option cards), 66,478 khakhi cards (police cards) and 65,169 no commodity cards.


Meanwhile the Civil Supplies CID has arrested a total of 30,340 persons in the last five years for violations and a total of 41,905 cases were detected under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and a total of 6,783 vehicles, including 1,770 four-wheelers have been seized during this period.
