People witness daredevilry stunts in Hollywood films with criminals hatching plan to loot a money train. Now in a similar act in real life robbers shocked all by stealing a whopping Rs 5.78crs by cutting open the roof of a mail wan attached to a train from Salem to Chennai. 


The robbery occurred when Reserve Bank of India decided to transport Rs 342 crores from Salem to Chennai on a mail wan attaching it to the No 11064 Salem-Chennai Egmore Express train. The currencies were kept in 226 cartons in two compartments of a train. 


The train which left Salem at 9PM on Monday night reached Chennai around 4 PM on Tuesday. The officials got shock of their life when they opened the mail van after the train reached Chennai Egmore. They found that some boxes had been tampered and currencies strewn around and found a 2x2 feet hole at the coach top. 


RBI officials confirmed that the robbers stole money worth Rs 5.78 crs through the hole at the coach top.Railway Protection Force registered case and started their investigations. Police found four cartons broken and cash in one of them missing completely. Another box was half empty and third box been opened but cash was just scattered. 


Police stations from Salem and Chennai have been alerted and forensic staff is now checking the railway tracks for clues about the robbers. The robbery shocked everyone as the money was transported with heavy security. 


Suspicion is on that the burglars could have made use of few stretches along the track that are yet fo be electrified. Another explanation is the robbery could have occurred when Salem Express stopped at Virudachalam junction in Villupuram district for engine change. The train is now in a yard at Egmore railway station in Chennai.
