Sharing of Cauvery water always increases tensions and passions between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. With Karnataka situated in the high level area, it has the advantage of deciding on tbe release of water and during heavy rains there will be no problem and infact, low lying areas in Tamil Nadu will be flooded with the release of cauvery water.
However during summer problem arises with Tamil Nadu farmers agitating for cauvery water and Karnataka farmers in the bordering district opposing the release of water. Successive governments of both states always sit on the fence till the problem reaches alarming proportions before trying to get their act.
During that time even implementation of Supreme Court order will be difficult for any state government as they allowed passions to reach the heights. In the ongoing detoriation of law and order problem between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, petty politics more than anything else worsened the situation.
Politicians, media and officials only added to the confusion concealing the real facts. While politicians from both sides lied, officials toed their lines and journalists turned jingoistic. Farmers from both sides donot know how much water the states are releasing or getting but political parties are playing with fire.
People often wonder why did Karnataka not ensure Tamil Nagu get 56% water since the beginning of June. Karnataka government hide facts of the tribunal formula from its farmers. No one from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu government worked earnestly to find a solution together.
Gone are the days when Rama Krishna Hegde, MGR or SM.Krishna and Karunanidhi held discussions to solve the problems like nabbing Veerappan but not to solve cauvery problem. States let farmers cry for cauvery water and and warm themselves in the fire they lit.
