The UN has said that it hopes to re start aid supplies to Aleppo and other parts of Syria in the near future as a convoy heads to a besieged district of rural Damascus and the aid operations were halted so security could be reviewed in the wake of Monday's deadly attack on a Red Cross convoy which the US believes was carried out by Russian jets.

According to reports, the UN plans to deliver medical supplies to the rebel-held suburb of Moadamiya in the capital and meanwhile, rebel areas of Aleppo have suffered their most intense airstrikes in months.

Earlier on Wednesday, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has blamed each other at the United Nations for violating the agreement and Kerry wants the warplanes to halt flights over aid routes, while Mr. Lavrov has suggested a possible three-day pause in fighting to get the truce back on track.

Kerry has also said an airstrike on an aid convoy in Aleppo raised "profound doubt" as to whether Russia and the Syrian government were committed to upholding the cessation of hostilities and has said it was the last chance to salvage the collapsing deal and find a way "out of the carnage" but the future of the country was "hanging by a thread".
