Sources from Hyderabad have stated that prices of vegetables are set to sky rocket courtesy rains which have been lashing neighboring districts and Ranga Reddy district, where fruits and vegetables constitute 74% of the total horticulture cropped area, has been severely hit by rain.



 

Ch Sanjay Kumar, assistant director of horticulture (RR district) has said rains have inundated many parts of the district, taking a toll on vegetable cultivation and Hyderabad consumes nearly 7.68 lakh metric tonnes of vegetables yearly, and over 4.5 lakh metric tonnes is sourced from RR district.

Meanwhile owing to incessant rainfall, officials have ruled that several hundred acres of vegetable farms were inundated. In Vikarabad mandal, 287 acres of vegetable farms were damaged and in Peddemul mandal, 30 acres of crop were damaged.



G V Ramanjenayulu, executive director, Center for Sustainable Agriculture, has said, there are many farmers who were unable to harvest their crop, which were washed away and even if they did harvest their crop, it would be difficult for them to transport it, as roads are inundated.
