Chennai sources have stated that Tamil Nadu will go to the local body polls in two phases on October 17th and 19th, State Election Commissioner P. Seetharaman has announced here on Sunday and when addressing a press conference, Mr. Seetharaman has said that the notification for the elections would be issued on Monday and nominations could be filed from the same day.



It was stated that counting of votes would be held on October 21st, following the announcement of elections, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force on Sunday. Nominations can be filed till October 3rd and they would be scrutinized on October 4th and withdrawal of nominations could be made on October 6th and all the elected candidates would assume charge on October 24th.

Seetharaman has added that local bodies under the Greater Chennai Corporation would go to the polls during the second phase on October 19th and the indirect polls for posts such as Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of Municipalities and similar posts in rural local bodies would be held on November 2nd.



Sources have added that a total of 1,31,794 posts, including 1,18,974 in rural local bodies and 12,820 posts in urban local bodies would be filled in the direct polls and a total of 13,362 posts in rural local bodies and 1,328 posts in urban local bodies would be filled up through indirect polls.
