Before, no one of us had forgotten the Guwahati gang molestation incident, there was another such incident repeating itself at Kolkata. Here in this latest incident, the girl was returning back home from tuition, along with another girl. A gang of 10 people who were sitting at a tea stall started making vulgar comments about the girl and then resorted to molestation. In a further addition to the dastardly incident, the father of the girl who came in for her rescue was beaten up, by the miscreants. It was only after the locals interfered in the issue the miscreants did stop their acts and run away.  In a sad turn of this incident, the police officer of the area, called this as a ‘Small incident.’ The incident and as well as the reaction of the police officer does smell of male chauvinism and as well the attitude of those men toward the women, as just tools of pleasure. The prevailing culture of hedonism, in the backdrop of the rampant commercialization, post the Globalization era, is responsible for the plight of the girls like that of the one in Guwahati and as well as the present case in Kolkata. The corporate culture is projecting women as objects of beauty, just to be savoured. They are being shown up in the movies, advertisements and all other channels of ‘entertainment’ as just sex dolls. The brains and the feelings of the woman are not being the topic of these media, but their bodies alone matter for them. Imbued with this culture it seems that a whole generation is losing its sensitivity toward the other  ‘Half of the sky’ we dwell under...
