As per report from Dharmapuri sources it was stated that the dry rocky bed of the Cauvery in Hogenakkal became the site of a protest to highlight the plight of the river and the people who depend on the river, as members of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam staged a demonstration on Tuesday demanding release of water by Karnataka and halt to the reservoir project in Mekedatu.

It was added that over 700 farmers have staged a demonstration demanding the intervention of the Center to make Karnataka comply with the Supreme Court order and release 2,000 cusecs of water daily. The farmers association also demanded that the Center convene the Cauvery Water Management Board as per the orders of the Supreme Court.

According to the protesters, even as the water dispute resolution was pending before the Supreme Court, the Karnataka government has allocated 5,912 crore to construct a dam to store the waters of the Cauvery and Arakavaty rivers. This would turn the entire State into a desert, as the drinking water security of over 20 districts in Tamil Nadu depended on the Cauvery.

Meanwhile the farmers association also called for action against the Karnataka government for what they called a “deliberate violation.” The protesters, who had arrived from the Western region and some parts of the Cauvery Delta districts, were removed by the police from the site after they staged a brief demonstration.
