United Nations Security Council Seat has been India's long cherished dream ever since India's first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru, declined the offer of Permanent UN seat around 1953 by the Soviet Union , requesting the same to be given to China.Another evidence say that even before the Russian offer, USA offered India, permanent seat in Security Council in 1950 but Nehru offered the same to China to reduce the international tensions.

From then on Security Council seat became a distant mirage and with China becoming a thorn in its flesh, India intensified its efforts to get the permanent security council seat. Now it is comingout that India and other members of the G4 are getting ready to comprmise for the UNSC seat. They have offered to forego veto powers initially as s permanent members a reformed Security Council as a bargaining chip to get the reform process moving.


India's Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin said “The issue of veto is important, but we should not allow it to have a veto over the process of Council reform itself,“ He added  “they shall not exercise the veto until a decision on the matter has been taken during a review“.


India along with Brazil,Germany and Japan formed G4 and is lobbying for the Council reforms and they mutually support each other's candidatures for permanent seats on an expanded body .
