Congress hopes of retaining power suffered huge blow in Uttarakhand when Chief Minister Harish Rawat lost from both Haridwar Rural and Kichcha seats. His defeat dealt a crushing blow to Congress hopes.
BJP swept the elections signaling the end of the Congress in the state. BJP won in 54 seats while Congress got confined to just 13 seats. The anti-incumbency and infighting in the Congress resulted in the crushing defeat.
Congress faced several defections and ran a lackluster campaign ahead of the elections. BJP however in the leadership of Modi united forgetting their differences and emerged victorious.
Rajnath Singh said,"This is a big victory. BJP has reached new heights in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh and has changed the political picture of the country.". BJP exceeded the exit poll predictions with many predicting the party to win around 40-50.
