PM Modi led Indian government finally  amended the Enemy Property act of 1968. The amendment to a  a 49-year old Act prevents the successors of those who migrated to Pakistan and China during Partition from claiming properties left behind in India.

The act incorporated the amendments made by the Rajya Sabha and passed the bill by voice vote. Rajnath Singh,Union Hme Mnister replying in the house said “The purpose of the bill is to clarify the 1968 Act. Inheritance law will not be applicable on enemy properties.This will put an end to the long pending issue which should have ideally happened in 2010, when the bill was introduced,”


Rajnath Singh rejected N K Premchandran of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) and other Opposition members contention that the bill iolated the principles of “natural justice” and amounted to “human rights violations”. He said “Pakistan has seized the properties of Indian citizens. It will be natural justice if their properties (of those who migrated to Pakistan) are not returned”.


He clarified “The law only applies on heirs of enemy property. The tenants of such property will be governed by the Tenancy Act,”
