Sources have stated that every year across the globe Blood Donor Day is observed on June 14th and this year the theme behind this is ‘Donate blood; donate now; donate often’. Dr. Sugandhi said twenty years ago there was a shortage of blood for about 60% and currently it is 40%.
She said the demand had increased considerably, but people who are voluntarily donating have decreased. She added that people should voluntarily come forward to donate blood. She said this summer donations were reduced and camps weren’t conducted. They are facing severe shortage which is around 80%.
Visakapatinam becoming the health hub for 13
districts and the city had gained fame for transplant surgeries and in
specialists’ surgeries. There is sharp jump in demand for blood presently and
the biggest challenge which is faced by blood banks in the city is from tribal
areas.
