It was being reported that the Congress high command has more or less come to an understanding on Telangana issue and a formal declaration was just a step away, this was the impression conveyed even by Digvijay Singh last week. But suddenly things took a different turn at PM’s residence during the core committee meeting.

Reliable sources suggest that the game plan was different and there were no CWC thoughts initially, but this happened due to Kiran. Late PM Indira Gandhi steadfastly opposed Telangana and Jai Andhra movements in 1969 and 1971 respectively and in this regard after drafting Gentlemen’s agreement; she made a historic speech in Indian Parliament on December 21st, 1972 over Andhra Pradesh.

Indira had then categorically denied bifurcation of AP on the grounds of emotions and the issue of lack of development. She believed that focused development alone can solve all issues. Sources say Kiran Kumar Reddy brought a copy of speech to the core committee meeting and read it verbatim highlighting the important aspects of her speech which made Sonia, Rahul and other Congress leaders very emotional and made them rethink over the whole issue again!
