A Chennai driver who was beaten by cops for not wearing a seat belt during driving, attempted self-immolation, and had been admitted to hospital with 65% burns, and currently is in critical condition. The driver was caught riding without a seat belt, near hotel Holiday Inn at Old Mahabalipuram road, and was thrashed by the cops. 

 


Angered and feeling humiliated by the cops acts, the driver set himself on fire and was Admitted to Kilpauk general hospital, Chennai. People present at the location blamed the ruthless behavior of cops as the reason for the act of the driver, and protested against the cops, and supported the driver.

It was later identified that the driver was Manikandan from Tirunelveli, who had been residing at Tambaram and was driving a rented car, and was stopped by cops at SRP tools stop and was beaten badly by 4 policemen.  After getting angered by them, Manikandan had stopped the car, took out petrol in a bottle and set himself on fire, as the cops fled from the place after they had thrashed him inhumanly by breaking his legs. With 65% Burns, Manikandan's condition is still reported to be critical.
